This micro-credential introduces the essentials of instructional design — a systematic approach that can guide the development of engaging and effective learning resources on health-related topics.
To earn this Level II Badge, you will investigate the theory and practice of conducting a needs analysis, utilizing technology-based tools and strategies and developing, implementing and evaluating an instructional plan.
You should pursue this micro-credential if:
You are a graduate student or a working professional
You are invested in improving the way practitioners learn about health-related topics and resources
You are interested in earning academic credit that count toward the pursuit of a graduate degree
This program can be completed entirely online and is offered in accordance with the for-credit courses that comprise the micro-credential. Please refer to the Course Catalog for the most recent information regarding course sections and schedules.

All learners who complete the required outputs will earn a Level II Badge.
Complete IDN 525: Foundations of Instructional Design (3 Credits). This course introduces students to the dynamic field of instructional design, which is a systematic approach to developing engaging, effective learning experiences using a range of media and technologies. Using a project-based approach, learners develop competence in each phase of the instructional design process as they plan a learning solution for a real-world problem.
Complete one of the following courses. Each of these 3-credit, graduate level courses delves further into educational theory, design and/or specific tools or strategies. Students will select a course based on their own interests. Each course has a range of requirements including readings, discussions and ongoing projects. The project completed for the selected course will complement the final project which the student has chosen for IDN 525.

Attend a webinar and complete an analytic paper – Coursework is complemented by a webinar during which professionals from the health field discuss the importance of instructional resources in their disciplines, including how they approach problems and opportunities related to current educational issues in health professions. Micro-credential candidates submit an analytic paper connecting their proposal to issues raised in the webinar, demonstrating your ability to apply theory to practice.
Assessment is conducted by the program director, who will evaluate each candidate’s body of work, including the two linked course projects and the culminating analysis, for quality and completeness.

These badges signify that learners are able to perform or produce an observable product that will be useful in professional environments. Subject matter experts will evaluate the artifacts produced by learners for quality.
By earning a micro-credential, learners across a wide array of industries, verticals and professional fields are able to showcase the acquisition of specialized knowledge that offers unique value in the workplace. Micro-credentials are flexible and versatile, designed and delivered in an accelerated format by our experienced faculty and industry thought leaders who understand critical shortages and skills gaps.
All students who complete a micro-credential associated with academic credit or co-curricular experiences will receive a designation on their transcript and a digital badge through Credly. Micro-credential earners are encouraged to share their achievements on resumes, social media platforms and e-portfolios.
Learners can begin their pursuit of micro-credentials at any level; individuals who are new to the field are best suited for Participation or Level I badges, whereas experienced professionals might be more interested in advanced Level III Badges or Level IV Certifications.
